Music In Our Schools Month Concert Information

The Wheatmore Choral and Band Departments will have a combined concert in honor of Music In Our Schools Month, an initiative sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, on Monday, March 14 at 7:00pm in the Wheatmore Auditorium. Please note the slight date change since this performance was announced last week. At this concert, the two departments will showcase their work at our state level music performance adjudications and do some demonstrations of the work we do on a daily basis in our music classes.

This will be a wonderful opportunities for our students to demonstrate what they know and learn in music classes and these music classes benefit them musically and non-musically.
We are asking for a $3 donation for entrance to the concert, which will be given to Harmony Music School, an after-school program for students to receive music lessons at no out-of-pocket cost. Week of November 29th

Chorus Families,

This is a ridiculously long email, with many attachments. I apologize in advance. If I could effectively communicate all of this information any more succinctly, I would, but it is all very important, so please read all the information that applies to your child and, as always, let me know if you have any questions. All of the attachments will also be posted on the Choral Department website, if they are misplaced at any time.
Honors Proficient Students
Honors Project This assignment is due no later than 3:25pm on Friday, December 18, 2015. I will accept this via paper or emailed to me, but it must be in my inbox by the deadline to be graded. Please see the attached information for detailed guidelines, as well as a comprehensive list of events that students may attend. This information is also posted on the Choral Department website.
Men's Choir
UNC-CH All-Carolina Male Choral Invitational Festival
In case your child has misplaced the information I sent home previously, please see the attached information letter and permission form for more information. As communicated in the attached letter, please submit the payment for registration no later than Friday, Dec. 4th to secure your child's participation in this event.
Performance at Westchester Harbour Assisted Living - These students will travel to High Point to perform at 9:30am on Wednesday, December 16th. We will leave at 9:00am from WHS. Students should be dressed in concert attire and ready to leave by 8:55am, which should not be an issue since this is during their class time. We will return during 2nd period, but these students will not be counted absent from 2nd period. Please read, complete and return the attached permission form so that your child may participate in this performance.
Women's Choir
Performance at ATMS
These students will travel to ATMS to perform at 8:00am on Friday, December 18th for the 7th grade students at ATMS. We will leave at 7:30am from WHS. I realize this is earlier than some buses arrive at WHS. I will be posting a sign up for students who ride a bus to get a ride with another student who drives to pick them up so that they will be at school on time. Please work with your child and ask them to communicate with you regarding a ride this morning so that all parties are informed. Let me know if I can help facilitate this communication. Students should be dressed in concert attire and ready to leave by 7:25am. We will return at approximately 9:30, then leave again at 11:00am to perform again, for the 8th graders. We will return by 1:20pm, just in time for our Early Release from school for the winter holiday. The students will miss some class time from other classes, but will not be counted absent. Please read, complete and return the attached permission form so that your child may participate in this performance.
All Students
Wicked ticket payments - all tickets should be paid in full no later than Tuesday, Dec. 1st. Please send payment by cash or check made out to WHS. If payment is not made by the deadline, tickets will be put back into the "bank" and up for grabs by students/parents who did not order tickets by the deadline.
Performance at High Point Holiday Stroll (Bienenstock Furniture Library) -
Saturday, December 5th 11:00am-12:00pm. This performance is required/graded for any student in the Honors Proficient section of their Chorus class. It is highly encouraged for all other students to participate. The Bienenstock Furniture Library is located in a stone house with a green roof at 1009 N. Main St., High Point. We will be singing on the front porch, so attire is formal concert attire, but please have students wear a winter coat and gloves, etc. to keep warm.
Performance at Braxton-Craven School - All Chorus students will travel to Braxton-Craven to perform, along with the ATMS Chorus students, at 8:30am on Friday, December 11th for all BC students. We will leave at 7:45am from WHS. Students should be dressed in concert attire and ready to leave by 7:40am. The students will miss some class time from other classes, but will not be counted absent. Please read, complete and return the attached permission form so that your child may participate in this performance.

Winter Concert - the Choral Department's Winter Concert is Thursday, December 17th at 7:00pm in the WHS Auditorium. It should last approximately one hour and Chorus students will be graded on their participation in the whole concert, including their time as audience members, so they are required to stay for the entire performance. Attire is formal concert attire (long black dresses and tuxedos rented from WHS). Tuxedos should be worn with a white undershirt, black socks, and black dress shoes. Dresses should be worn with black (preferably flat) dress shoes. Examples of shoes that are not considered "dress shoes": Converse, Vans, Flip Flops, Boots, Sneakers. If shoes will pose a problem to your child's participation in this graded event, please contact me as soon as possible, and I will do everything in my power to help the student be appropriately attired for the performance. Also, I would prefer female students' hair be pulled up or back, off of their faces for this performance. This very possibly may be an issue for male students as well. Part of our curriculum includes use and demonstration of appropriate facial expression for performance. If a students' hair affects the students' face from being seen, I would hate for that student's performance grade to be affected negatively. All students call time for the performance is 6:00pm. This means all students should be dressed in their concert attire, ready to perform no later than 6:00pm. I will be staying at school between 3:25 and 6:00, so if transportation would be an issue in the student getting back to school by 6:00 they are welcome to stay with me after school. Please let me know if your child will be staying with me after school.
Spring Musical Auditions - the spring musical is yet to be determined (and will depend on who auditions) but auditions will be held Thursday, Jan. 7th and Friday, Jan. 8th after school in the WHS Auditorium. Students will sign up for a specific audition time on Thursday, Jan. 7th and need to also be available if we need to hear them sing or read again on Friday, Jan. 8th. The spring musical and auditions are open to ALL Wheatmore students!
Pictures and Videos - If any of you have recordings of previous performances of any WHS Choral ensembles. I'd like to have these for posterity and to "advertise" for our program. I have added a link to our YouTube channel on the WHS Chorus website.
Progress Reports - These will go out on Thursday, December 3rd from all teachers/classes. Let me know if you have questions about your child's grade. Better yet, ask your child! :)

Week of Sunday, November 22nd

Parents/Guardians,

Firstly, let me wish all of you a wonderful, peaceful Thanksgiving. I hope you have time to spend with loved ones and renew our sense of gratitude for all we have to be thankful for. I am most definitely thankful to have the opportunity to teach each of my students and get to know them and their families. I am very grateful to be the Chorus Teacher at Wheatmore.
Secondly, I emailed a spreadsheet late last week which is a breakdown of all the money that has been turned in to me or to the school and all the money that is owed to the Choral Department for each Chorus student. Each student's final balance is on the third sheet of this document. Please send payment for balances in the negative (indicated by an amount in parentheses) as soon as possible. If money has been paid for and event or opportunity your child has taken part in, the Choral Department has paid that, and needs to be reimbursed by your payment as soon as possible. Please make arrangements for this payment to be made via cash or check made out to Wheatmore High School, indicating what the check is for in the memo line. If you have any questions about these balances, feel free to contact me at your convenience. I am re-sending the Student Account document to this email if you haven't had a chance to look at it.
Lastly, once we come back from Thanksgiving holiday, we have several performances in a very short amount of time. Please refer to the List of Events document I have sent home, first on August 24th and several other times since then with updated information. The most recent version of this document is attached to this email. The only update/change that has happened recently is that WHS Spring Musical Audition dates have been added. As the events get closer, I will email and distribute detailed information about attire, exact call times, etc.

Weeks of Oct. 19-23 and 26-30

Chorus Families,

These next two weeks are busy ones for our students! Please see below for details about the weeks events. Also, please note that in the call that was sent home tonight there was mention of a Chorus concert on October 22. THERE IS NOT A CHORUS CONCERT ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22. At the beginning of the year, it was tentatively scheduled but in more recent versions of our Events List, and as communicated in class and via email over the course of the semester, I let students and parents know that we would not be having this concert. Women's Choir will be participating in the Wingate University Women's Choir Festival on this date (information below), but there is not a Wheatmore Chorus Concert. I apologize for any confusion. The detailed information about each upcoming event is below. I know this email is long, but that is because it contains very important, detailed information that you and your child need to know. If your child is not involved in an event, please feel free to ignore the information. :)

Community Performance Wed., Oct. 21 10:30am Westchester Harbour Assisted Living Women’s Choir
All Women's Choir students will participate in this performance and trip, which will take place during their class period. Students should wear black, concert dresses, which are provided by WHS Chorus. If you are chaperoning this trip, I will email you more information soon. Thank you in advance!

Wingate University Women’s Choir Festival Thurs., Oct. 22 4:30pm Greensboro Women’s Choir

Women's Choir will participate in this event, which will take place at Christ United Methodist Church, 410 N Holden Rd, Greensboro, NC 27410. Students should meet in the Chorus room at 3:30 on Thursday. Students should wear their Chorus T-shirts, or WHS shirt and jeans or something coordinating. Students should bring their concert dress and appropriate shoes. No HIGH heels, please! We will travel together to the festival on an activity bus.The only cost involved in this event is $5.00 for pizza dinner that we will have during the festival. Please send this (cash or check made out to WHS) as soon as possible. If this is not sent in before Thursday, this cost will be added to the student's Chorus Account balance. The concert, which will include pieces sung by the WHS Women's Choir, as well as pieces by several other local high schools, the Wingate University Women's Choir, and also pieces by all of the singers together, will begin at 7:30pm. Parents, friends, and family are all welcome to attend the concert, which is free. Parents may transport their child home from the festival, but I must see the parent(s) and students together after the concert to release the student. I will not allow a student to ride home with anyone other than a parent, or allow a student to leave the church building unless I see a parent in person. Please understand my motivation in this is to keep your child safe. I appreciate your cooperation in advance. This event will serve as the students' Performance Participation grade for this Nine Weeks. In other words, it is required. Please see the Choral Department Handbook for more, detailed information about Performance Participation expectations and grading. A permission form was given out to students on Friday, October 16th, in class. Please fill out the bottom section of this form and return it as soon as possible. I would hate for a student to be unable to participate in this event and their Performance Participation grade be negatively affected because a Permission form was not returned signed.

All County Chorus Mon., Oct. 26 - Tues., Oct. 27 5-8pm, 10-7pm WHS selected students
Selected students from Men's Choir and Women's Choir will participate in this county-wide honor choir. Students have been attending rehearsals several days a week to learn the repertoire and will work with a well-known (and beloved) Choral Director and Composer, Mrs. Gwen Hall, the retired Choral Director from Southwestern Randolph High School, on Monday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Oct. 27th. This event will take place at Wheatmore High School this year. Students should meet directly after school on Monday, Oct. 26th in the Chorus room. Students should bring their music, a black folder (provided by WHS), a pencil, and a snack to the event on Monday. Snacks/food will not be able to be delivered to students. On Tuesday, students will report directly to the Chorus room in the morning. Students should wear their Chorus t-shirts (or a WHS shirt if the student does not have a Chorus t-shirt). Students need to bring their concert attire with them to school on Tuesday morning. Dresses and tuxedos are provided by the Wheatmore Chorus, and are rented each semester for a $10 fee. Please see the Choral Department Handbook for more information about concert attire. Be sure to help students remember appropriate shoes, white undershirts, black socks, if applicable. Students should bring a bag lunch (something that does not require refrigeration) for Tuesday, or they will be able to purchase lunch as usual from the WHS Cafeteria. The concert on Tuesday is at 6:30pm. Please arrive early, but also be aware that the Middle School All-County Chorus concert is at 6:00pm, so space will be extremely tight. Please be patient with the logistics of an event of this nature and allow plenty of time to find a seat and get settled in time to hear the first selection. It will be a wonderful night of music and is open and free to the public.

Recruitment Performance Thurs., Oct. 29 8am-9am, 11-12 ATMS Men’s Choir
1st Block Men's Choir will travel to ATMS and perform twice on Thursday, Oct. 29th to sing for the 8th Grade and then the 7th Grade. This is an early release day for RCSS. Students should wear their concert attire (tuxedos provided by WHS) for these performances. Because of ATMS' schedule, we are performing VERY early. Students need to make plans to be able to be on the Activity Bus (outside the Chorus room), dressed in Concert Attire, NO LATER THAN 8:00am. I know this will pose a challenge for some who ride buses (and some who drive!) but I trust that arrangements will be made to get the students to school at this time, unless I hear otherwise from parents. We will perform in the morning, then come back to WHS for a fe hours, then travel back to ATMS to perform for the other grade level at 11:00am. Students will be released from their WHS class at 10:50am. We will return to WHS at approximately 12:30pm. Students will have eaten lunch at WHS before we leave for the second performance. A Permission form will be sent home with students in a few days. Please fill out the bottom section of this form and return it as soon as possible. Students will not be able to participate in this performance/trip if the permission form is not returned signed. This performance will serve as the students' Performance Participation grade for this Nine Weeks. If you are chaperoning this event, I will be sending you more information soon. Thank you in advance!

National Anthem Performance Fri., Oct. 30 7:00pm WHS Homecoming Honors and any others
Firstly, and most importantly, please be reminded that Friday, October 30th is a Teacher Workday. This performance is required for Honors Perform students only, but I would LOVE to have a large group of students to represent the Choral Department at this Homecoming game. Students need to meet IN THE CHORUS ROOM (unless they are also involved in Marching Band or Homecoming Court) at 6:30pm. Students should wear their Chorus t-shirts for this performance, or a WHS shirt if they do not have a Chorus t-shirt. Students will sing right before the game, and then will be released to watch the game or leave.
As always, please contact me via email, or by calling the school between 1:30 and 3:30pm, if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to sharing these experiences with your children!

Sincerely,

Sarah Downey

P.S. - If you completed the order form for a ticket to "Wicked", the order was placed on Friday and we have tickets for Saturday, January 9th! Please send payment as you described in the order form.

Week of Sept. 14-18

If you ordered a t-shirt, but haven't paid, please bring payment as soon as possible (cash or check made out to Wheatmore High School). Students who have ordered a shirt, but have not paid will not receive their shirts until payment is received.

Please see the attached document about the Wingate University 9/10 Select Honor Choir and auditions. Hard copies of this information will be given out in class on Tuesday. This event is available to 9th and 10th graders only, so feel free to ignore the attached document if you have an 11th or 12th grade student! :)

Please read all of this information carefully, since not knowing the information could affect the student's ability to participate in All-County. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Announcements - June 2015
Hi, Chorus Parents/Guardians and Students!
Another great week has past and we're moving right along! Here are some important things I want to be sure you are fully informed about. Please let me know if you have questions.

1. Half Steps and Whole Steps Assessment - Men's Choir and Women's Choir will be taking a written assessment (quiz length) of the student's ability to aurally identify the difference between half steps and whole steps on FRIDAY, September 11th. Parents/Guardians, if this sounds Greek to you, ask your child to explain. Double benefit! :)

2. Upcoming Performances - The Wheatmore Chorus (Honors Proficient level students and any other student who wants to) is performing the National Anthem at the Bush Hill Festival and A-T Serco Club's Chili Cookoff. See below for details. This information was also given out to students in class on Friday.

National Anthem at Bush Hill Festival - Saturday, September 12th. Meet in front of the main stage at Nattie’s Yogurt Shoppe in Archdale (101 Bonnie Pl, Suite O, Archdale, NC 27263) at 8:30am. We will sing at 9:00am and then students will be free to leave. This performance is required for students enrolled in the Honors Proficient level of Chorus. All other students are encouraged to attend. Please wear a Wheatmore-colored shirt (Red, Black, White, or Gray) and solid colors shorts or pants.

National Anthem at A/T Serco Club's Big Galute Chill Cook-off - Saturday, September 19th. Meet at Creekside Park (214 Park Dr, Archdale, NC 27263) in the field to the left of the stage at 10:30am. We will sing at approximately 11:00am and then students will be free to leave. This performance is required for students enrolled in the Honors Proficient level of Chorus. All other students are encouraged to attend. Please wear Chorus T-shirt (information forthcoming) and solid colors shorts or pants.
3. All-County Chorus Auditions - Any student who is interested in participating in the RCSS High School All-County Chorus may sign up to audition on either Wednesday (tomorrow) or Thursday. Students must prepare a choral song to sing. More information about All-County Chorus is attached.
4. Chorus T-shirts - All students have communicated with me that they intend to purchase a Chorus T-shirt. Please fill out the order form, either using the online order form (click on the link below to be taken to the order form) or by filling out the paper version, given out in class over the past few days, and returning it to me as soon as possible, with $10 payment (cash or check made out to Wheatmore), I would LOVE to have these t-shirts delivered in time for our upcoming performances!
5. I have been posting all the documents handed out in class on the Chorus webpage. If you misplace or a document didn't make it to you, please go to the website and they will be located in the "File Manager" section, where you can download and print a new copy.
6. Spring Trip - After careful consideration, I have decided that we will NOT take a spring trip to New York City this spring. I am, however, looking into trips to other locations, namely Atlanta, Nashville, or Washington, DC. Also, as a third-tier possibility, there are some "broadway" musicals coming to NC this winter that we could get group-rate tickets to and take a day trip (or two) to see those performances. I am waiting to hear back from the travel company with quotes and possible itineraries before I share that information with you. I will communicate about our options and get your input once I've heard back from the travel company. Not going to NYC is disappointing, but there's always next year. ;)
7. I will be distributing information about auditions coming up for the Wingate University 9/10 All-Carolina Select Honor Choir. All 9th and 10th grade Chorus students are eligible to audition for this wonderful event. If the information doesn't make it to you by the end of the week, check the website or let me know.
8. ADDED PERFORMANCE - We have been asked to sing the National Anthem and Alma Mater at the Homecoming Football game on Friday, October 30th at 7:00pm. This day is a Teacher Workday, however, this will be a required/graded performance for Honors Proficient students and all other students are HIGHLY encouraged to perform, too. I would love a HUGE group there to sing. More information will be communicated closer to the event, but I wanted you to know about it now.
As always, let me know if you have questions or concerns about anything!
