Rehearsal Expectations and Self-Management Contract (Nov. 16, 2017)
Hello, Chorus Parents/Guardians,
Attached are two additions to our Choral Department Handbook that I realized were information that I overlooked in the original writing of the Handbook. It has become very evident this semester that the majority of Chorus students needed detailed, clear guidelines for what is expected in a music rehearsal. Therefore, I will be including this information in the Choral Department Handbook in future semesters, and it has been discussed with students in class over the past two days. I also gave students the opportunity to both ask questions about these expectations as well as offer suggestions for additions or edits to them.
To go along with the new rehearsal expectations, I have created a "Self-Management Contract" for each Chorus student. Students have two options for this contract:
1. Agree to follow and uphold the expectations in the printed document as is. Sign it and return it in my Inbox no later than class on Monday.
 OR
2. Reflect on their classroom participation grade and behavior and whether or not they are meeting expectations in these areas and create their own Self-Management Contract, stating at least five goals/expectations for participation in class that they self-identify and want to work on, and are willing to uphold in class. If student take this option, they should reflect seriously on this, type up the contract, either turn in a printed version, signed, or email it to me no later than Monday. I will have a one-on-one conversation with each student and, if I agree that this Self-Management contract is acceptable, the student will be held to the guidelines outlined in it.
If a student fails to complete either option 1 OR option 2, the student will receive a Class Participation grade of Zero until one of the options is completed.
Choral Music is an art form and a creative, intellectual, and emotional outlet, all of which are so important for young people to have, as well as being an academic subject. I take my job to help your children grow into well-rounded musicians, and more well-rounded humans, very seriously.  I believe strongly in the power of music as a vehicle to making the world a better place, and young people more happy, successful older people. :)
I will be making individual phone calls and emails to parents/guardians of students who I believe need to conference together with their child and myself in order to help the student be successful in Chorus this semester.
Lastly, please know that my high expectations and all related guidelines and actions come from a place of caring very much for every student who walks through my door each day. I care about their musical growth, but mostly I care about their ability to be successful, happy adults. I hope that Chorus is a place where they can be happy and grow in these ways, while learning about Choral Music.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions!

End of Quarter Information - Voices of Valor

Hi, Voices of Valor Families!

I have a few pieces of important information about the end of the first quarter.

Concert Attire

All new items that needed to be ordered arrived in the last few weeks and were distributed to students at that time. Please refer to the Choral Department Handbook and be reminded that it is the responsibility of the student/parent to get concert attire items hemmed to the appropriate length. When marking the dress or pants for hemming, the student should wear the shoes they will wear to the concert (black dress shoes with no heel). Pants should bend once at the top of their shoes and dresses should come to 1 inch off the floor. PLEASE DO NOT CUT ANY OF THE MATERIAL WHEN GETTING IT HEMMED! If the material is cut, we may not be able to use the dress or pants again in the future, which is a very important thing! If the material is cut and is unusable in the future the student’s account will be charged a fee.

Homecoming

Voices of Valor will be performing the National Anthem at the Homecoming Football game this Friday, October 20th. The game begins and we will sing at approximately 7:30. Students must report no later than 6:45 to the CHORUS ROOM. Attire for this performance is anything school-appropriate on legs and our VV Baseball Tees on top. If a student is still waiting on his/her Baseball Tee, any red or WHS shirt is acceptable. Students may stay for the game or leave after we are done singing, at approximately 7:35.

Fall Concert

The Choral Department's Winter Concert will be Tuesday, October 24th at 7:00pm in the Auditorium. This is our culminating performance for the quarter, demonstrating the skills and information the students have learned since August. Students will be graded on their participation and performance in this concert (Major Assessment grade). Please refer to the Choral Department Handbook for more information if you have any questions about the grading of this event. Voices of Valor Student performers will be required to be in the Auditorium and ready to perform at 5:30 for rehearsal with the cellist. The concert will last approximately 45 minutes. All students will join our alumni in performing WHS Alma Mater at the end of the concert, so students will not receive credit for their performance and participation if they leave before the end of the concert.

The Choral Department is partnering with Fellowship of Christian Students and will be collecting canned food items for Hurricane victims. Admission to our Fall Concert will be one canned food item per person. Thank you in advance for your help with this!

Honors Project

All students enrolled in Voices of Valor and/or an Honors section of a Chorus class are required to complete a Concert Review project. More information about this project was distributed to these students in class the first weeks of school and is posted on the Chorus website, http://tinyurl.com/wheatmorechorus

The end of October has many approved events that students could attend to satisfy the concert attendance part of this project. Please see the List of Approved Events for Honors Project for detailed information.

Fundraiser Delivery

The items that were ordered for our Fall Fundraiser will be delivered to WHS from the fundraising company at the end of October. The day and time of delivery hasn’t been set yet. I will send out an email as soon as I receive that information. On the day of delivery, students should plan on coming by the Chorus Room at the end of the school day to pick up their items. It is expected that all items are delivered to customers who placed orders within 48 hours of being delivered to school. It is the student’s/parent’s responsibility to get the items delivered.

Student Account Balances

I will be sending out balances as soon as I get the information from the Fundraising company with each student’s profit amount, so it will most likely be the end of the month before I will be able to send balances out.

Report Cards

Report Cards will be distributed on Nov. 14th. The last day of the 1st Quarter is October 30th. After this date, no missing assignments/make-up work can be accepted. Please plan accordingly!

Please let me know if you have any questions!
